Thanks to [personal profile] cesy for the heads-up -- Hope not Hate have launched a US site:

Hope Not Hate (Twitter: [twitter.com profile] hopenothate_USA)

By way of making a dramatic entry, this seems to have been timed to co-ordinate with the announcement of their epic undercover project: Patrik Hermansson, an extremely brave young Swedish grad student, infiltrated the alt-right and lived undercover in the movement in London and the US for nearly a year, wired for sound and carrying hidden cameras. This ultimately included being at Charlottesville and witnessing the car attack that killed Heather Heyer.

The documentary is coming soon, and the comprehensive report on the international alt-right (for which the infiltration was part of the research) is here:

The International Alternative Right

News reports:

New York Times: Undercover With the Alt-Right

Raw Story: ‘It’s gonna end with concentration camps’: Alt-right executive boasts of a future Europe with Hitler on their money

As you will have noticed, I love HnH. They have a long history working against fascist and far right groups in the UK, through research, infiltration, legal action, anti-racist/xenophobic education and campaigning, and their work seems to have naturally become international as the "alt-right" has (e.g. with the "Defend Europe" boat). I think their expertise (and the willingness of their reporters to put their necks on the line, holy fuck) will be a formidable addition to the US scene.

Also they will allow you to give them money to help sue Nigel Farage, and honestly I would love them for that alone. PLEASE TAKE MY MONEY, PLEASE.

The Guardian: Medieval porpoise 'grave' on Channel island puzzles archaeologists

I love everything about this story:

Archaeologists digging at an island religious retreat have unearthed the remains of a porpoise that, mystifyingly, appears to have been carefully buried in its own medieval grave.

MAYBE THE PORPOISE WAS A MONK, HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THAT.

... and now I eagerly await the medieval monk were-porpoise shifter romance.

For a different kind of wonderful:

The Fader: This Artist Is Filling London With Murals Of Extraordinary Black Women

The art is gorgeous, but what I really love is that he's portraying his female friends, people who aren't famous but are ordinary/extraordinary people - a youth worker, a psychotherapist, and so on. And I love the shots of the murals with the real women posed next to them.

Mini Wetterhorn

Pattern by Tereena Clarke of Artecy Cross Stitch based on a painting by Joseph Anton Koch.

Stitch parking level 2: achievement unlocked. I can't tell you how many times I went to park a thread and found another thread already parked there. I think I properly fixed everything I caught, but goodness only knows if this looks anything like it was supposed to.

I can’t decide if I’m ready to level up to the pattern I’m dying to make, or if I should do one more slightly harder pattern first before working my way up to that. My end goal is a massive HAED pattern with 234 colors.

The second picture is a distance shot because this pattern was done in the pointillist style, so the farther away you stand, the more detailed it looks.

This week was a good week for the project, I managed to get lots done. Helped in no small part by having the day off on Friday and having decided to binge listen to a podcast series while I was at it. Unsurprisingly, around five solid hours of cross-stitching does make an impact on a project.

Don't know much about history
Don't know much about theology
Don't know much 'bout how to write a book
Don't know how to cite the quotes I took
But I know all that I say must be true
And I know if you believed it, too
What a wonderful world this would be

Don't know much about geography
Don't know much sociology
Don't know how to understand folklore
Don't know what a reference book is for
But I do know that one god is bad
And if we'd kept the goddess we once had
What a wonderful world this would be

Now, I don't claim to be a goddess
But I'm tryin' to be
For maybe if I'm a goddess, people
You'll all worship me.

Don't know much about history
Don't know much about technology
Don't know much...

[personal profile] rosepsyche's paean to the Power of Story is also quoteworthy:

I have to call "bull" on Antiope's reasoning that art and music are inferior because they are "not alive" for another reason. No, such creations aren't living, breathing things. However (and I apologize if this gets a bit corny), the best of them can seem as if they are alive, get us invested in their characters, have us cheering about their triumphs and crying over their tragedies. They are just as valuable in their own way for their ability to entertain, to inspire, to teach, to help us grow and develop by seeing the world from a new point of view, and I don't think anyone involved in creating them would appreciate being told that their work can never compare to something that was squeezed out of a vagina.

Remix Revival has opened for reading, and my remixer did this:

A Bright Girdle Furled (Skip to 46 Remix) (1297 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Kamen Rider Drive
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Shijima Kiriko, Banno Tenjuurou, Shijima Gou, Chase | Mashin Chaser, Heart Roidmude, Brain Roidmude, Medic Roidmude
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence
Summary:

Kiriko faces her father a final time.

(Very AU.)

I'd figured, after some present-shaking, that either "An Apparition Not Looking Up", (where Kiriko does a certain thing instead of Gou in episode 46, and things do not happen to Chase Spoiler )) or "Taking Up A Tape" (partly-robotized Kiriko and Gou are kidnapped by a well-meaning Heart as children) were the most likely to be remixed. I was partially right - my remixer actually remixed "A Bright Girdle Furled", which shares a few things in common with "An Apparition Not Looking Up", but is about Kiriko successfully transforming into Drive. ("Girdle" was written as part of my yearly June ficspam, and I still had "Apparition" on the brain when I wrote it.)

So, this remix is set during episode 46 (where "Apparition" is set), but Kiriko is Drive and they've presumably taken care of another fight Spoiler ) in the same episode. Obviously, in this universe characters who did not survive in canon survive (more or less) in this timeline, and some family relationships are established that weren't in the original one. I suspect I know who wrote this, so I don't think I'll be surprised when reveals come, but it's always lovely to see their writing. Hopefully they'll write more in this universe!

On the writing end, I did post my remix barely on time and I think my remixee liked it? I think they'll also be able to figure out it's me if they look closely as we do share a fandom or two. I did have to do quite a bit of canon review for the character voices which delayed the remix.

I'm working on two fics for the moment and hope to get to a third. I've got one for Remix Madness that I'm trying to post on time, a second I'm kind of stuck on (hi Jade, please cooperate, I know I'm old enough to be your mum but I would like to write this), and I'm trying to get at least something out for Fandom Giftbox. And I need to make a final editing pass on a certain something.
