A Discourse on Politics
Jan. 26th, 2006 02:52 pmI understand by writing this, I may be betraying my political leanings, but I'm sure you all lean the same as I do...Today in class I did a presentation on money and the gentry in Austen's "Emma" and my professor pointed out that though concealed, our America has its own gentry...families that have been in power since the beginning of the republic. For example, W is descended on his mother's side from Pierce, an early american president. He tries to be "one of us" but at base level he is not.
Then I drew some parallels between the ancient Roman republic and our own. Presicely, the secession of the plebs. Plebs were only people who had not been defined by "Romulus" as one of the leading families of Rome, by the time the republic was older. But they were forbidden from rule, which was reserved exclusively for the patrician families. Isn't that what's happening now? Surely, anyone can run for office. But really it is only people from this higher, certainly rich class.
It's just a scary parallel, I think. Should we seceed? lol.
